Moving house or to another location can be stressful. You may consider hiring a removal service . Or perhaps you could do it yourself, it could be fun and you would save yourself quite a lot of money . The sooner you begin packaging the easier organizing you move becomes. In order to do so you will need the proper moving materials such as:
The risk of something being damaged during the move cannot be avoided. However we can reduce this risk by packaging properly. Here is some advice on how to do this:
Small electrical appliances
Separate all your appliances (toasters, mix masters, etc).
Make sure they are all clean and complete, plugs, lids etc.
Wrap them one by one in bubble paper. Put them in a strong cardboard box, firmly sealed with sealing tape, fill the spaces around the items with bubble paper or ----------- and mark the box saying FRAGIL, SMALL APPLIANCES.
Dishes, crystal and other delicate items
Wrap each item separately with bubble paper and seal them with sealing tape. Separate the plates with bubble paper.
Fill the bottom of a strong box with bubble paper and Seal Tape place the items in layers, filling all spaces with Poly Chips or bubble paper, and doing the same between layers.
Refrigerators
One day before moving empty the refrigerator and defrost it. Never leave perishable items. Clean the inside.
Wrap the shelves or trays (especially if they are glass) and seal the wrapping. Secure all objects which might move with sealing tape. Seal the doors so they do not open.
Wrap the whole refrigerator with sealing paper(300mts) to avoid scratching during the removal.
Dishwasher
Make sure it is empty and then secure all movable parts with sealing tape. Do not leave dishes inside.
Close the door and seal it with sealing tape so it does not open. Also secure the hose and plug with tape.
Wrap with sealing film to avoid scratching.
Washing machine
Wash all dirty clothing a few days before moving.
Remove all the water from the machine, if possible from the hose too. Dry the inside with a towel.
Place towels around the cylinder to avoid displacement.
Secure the lid and the electrical cable with tape. Cover the machine with sealing paper to avoid scratching.
Televisions, DVD’s, videos and music centres
Make sure the equipment is cool.
If possible use the original container. If you do not have the original box then wrap the item in sealing paper and place in a box. Fill in all the spaces with bubble paper. Seal the box and mark it. "FRAGIL, ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT"
Computers, scanners, printers
Make copies of all the information and keep the diskettes separately in case of loss. Keep the diskettes and CD’s in a separate box. Do not package any items with magnetic material as it can be lost.
Unplug everything and identify where they should be plugged in at later date to avoid confusion when unpacking. Place them all in a box with the mouse, the keyboard and other accessories. Make sure the box is sealed and all items are secure by placing bubble paper around them.
If you do not have the original box, use the double box method, place your equipment in a box, lined with bubble paper and making sure it does not move, you can put the cables inside too. Do not let the equipment touch the sides of the box. Once it is secure, seal the box and then place this box inside a larger box, previously lined with plastic foam on the bottom, once this is done place plastic foam in all the spaces and then seals the box.
Make sure to remove the ink cartridge. Once sealed mark each box with "FRAGIL COMPUTER"
Pictures, Mirrors, Vases…
Wrap each item using a lot of bubble paper. Protect the frames. Place each item in a box cushioned with bubble paper.
For small sculptures you will need a box a least 30% larger than the item and a large amount of Poly Chips
Fill a third of the box with Poly Chips place the item in a vertical position so that it does not touch the sides of the box, then fill in around it with more Poly Chips.
Seal the box and mark it "FRAGIL: ART".
Mirrors
Pack each mirror with bubble paper, putting extra on the corners and in the centre of the mirror.
Place the mirrors in flat boxes lined with bubble paper. Seal the box and mark with "FRAGIL: MIRRORS
Toys and children’s clothes
Wrap the children’s things as late as possible before moving, it will make things easier.
If the children are over five, pack their things with them, helping them to look forward to the move, letting them express their feelings about the move, leaving their friend, school and going to a new environment. Letting them take part often helps them.
While the children pack their things talk to them about where they are going to put them in their new house. Let the children mark the boxes with their names or a drawing.
Make sure all the toys are clean and any boxes of paints or puzzles safely closed so the pieces do not disappear.
Lamps
Remove the light bulbs and the shades.
Wrap the shades in bubble paper and if possible pile them on top of each other in a box with wrap film.
Wrap the foot of the lamp in bubble paper. Place them in boxes with Poly Chips. Seal them and mark them "LAMPS"
Books
Do not use large boxes. Books are very heavy which makes lifting difficult.
If you are going to use a courier company for moving, use Special boxes for books which protect the corners.
Chest of drawers
It is better if the drawers are empty to make the item lighter. Use boxes for clothes or bedding.
Wrap the item with protective wrapping to avoid scratching and to make sure the drawers stay closed.
Clothes and other household linens
Use large boxes, as linens use a lot of space but do not weigh too much. Fold items to avoid wrinkling. Once the boxes are filled and sealed, mark TOWELS, SHEETS ETC
Consider buying Wardrobe Boxes for your better clothes, such as suits, evening wear etc: Even for clothes you might need before unpacking in your new home or location.
And remember: New home, New life ...
